The 33rd International Film History Conference is an integral part of cinefest, where the topics of the festival will be explored in presentations and discussions. The Conference Opening will take place on November 19, 2020 in the Metropolis Cinema. During the event, teh winners of the Willy Haas-Award will be presented. The lectures of the conference take place from 20 – 22 November 2020, from 9:30 – 16:00 o’clock, in Metropolis cinema. To attend the conference a registration is necessary.
Presentations are limited to ca. 20 minutes, followed by a discussion. Conference languages are German or English (no live translation available).
Due to the restrictions imposed by coronavirus containment measures, we are planning to offer live streaming participation in the conference this year.

- Maler des Lichts. Bert Haanstra zwischen niederländischer Klassik und deutscher Avantgarde
- Licht ist Schöpfung – im Leben, in der Malerei, in der Fotografie und im Film. Erst im Licht werden die Dinge sicht- und wahrnehmbar, wie uns schon Rembrandt in seinen Gemälden eindrucksvoll vor Augen führte. Der Niederländer galt seinerzeit als moderner Beobachter und ‚Regisseur’, als „Maler des [zeitgenössischen] Lebens“.1 An die Tradition Rembrandts anknüpfend beobachtet auch der niederländische Maler, Fotograf, vor allem jedoch Filmemacher Bert Haanstra sein Land und seine Zeitgenossen, indem er die geografische Lage seiner Heimat sowie die gesellschaftshistorische und kulturelle Entwicklung der Niederländer – oft mit einem humorvollen Augenzwinkern – reflektiert. Unverkennbar finden sich in seiner Art des Umgangs mit Licht zum einen deutliche Parallelen zur niederländischen Tradition der Hell-Dunkel-Malerei Rembrandts und Vermeers, zum anderen aber auch und besonders deutliche Bezüge zur Auffassung des fotografischen und filmischen Bildes der Bauhaus-Bewegung und der Begründer des absoluten Films in den 1920er Jahren. Beginnend mit den fotografischen Experimenten Laszlo Moholy-Nagys soll im Vortrag dargelegt werden, welchen Einfluss die Avantgarde in Deutschland auf Haanstras Filmästhetik hatte und inwiefern seine Formgebung durch Licht und Bewegung im Kontext der Theorien von Adolf Behne und Rudolf Arnheim als Filmkunst bezeichnet werden kann.

- Doubles for everyone: Transit characters as tactics for involving the public in Dutch documentaries since the 1960s.
- This presentation investigates the appearance of transit characters such as tramps, taxi drivers or urban passers-by in documentaries produced by Dutch filmmakers since the 1960s. It analyses these figures in their function for the public as kinds of doppelgangers, to re-direct affect and attention and to stimulate interest in and reflection about social and geographical environments. The films investigated are: Alleman („Everyman or the Human Dutch“, 1963, by Bert Haanstra), Op de bodem van de hemel (1965 by Jan Vrijman), Le Masque/ Het Masker (1989-1990 by Johan van der Keuken) and Metall und Melancholie / Metal and Melancholy 1994 by Heddy Honigmann). These “everybody” figures are located in a genealogy and iconology of visual figurations addressing and involving the audience that takes account of the longue durée of such visual figurations. Besides, also the specific transformation and forms of appearance of these figures that has emerged in postmodern, globalised societies since the 1960s is investigated. A special focus is on the role these figures assume in popularising political positions, in constituting authenticity and in convincing and in persuading the spectators. The particularity of the Dutch documentary tradition in this respect is highlighted.
