Under the motto “Film Europe”, the next volumes will explore the diverse international connections between the German film industry and other countries in the first three decades of the 20th century: With their professionalism, German film migrants shaped the image of British film in the 1930s; During the First World War, Denmark was a back door to the world for the German film industry, Danish filmmakers had a strong influence on German silent film; émigré Russian film producers and directors created large-scale productions for the European market in Berlin and Paris; the relationship between the German and French film industries reflects the ambiguous relationship between the two European countries in which cinema was “invented” over 100 years ago.
