The script by the former expressionist poet and now Minister of Culture Johannes R. Becher uses a detective story to portray the different developments in West and East Berlin shortly after the war. When Wolfgang Staudte declined to direct, Dudow, assisted by Kurt Maetzig and Richard Groschopp (as a “collective”), took over the film.
