In 1971 13 filmmakers founded Filmverlag der Autoren for the distribution and production of their films. The shareholders included Peter Lilienthal, Wim Wenders, R. W. Fassbinder, and the Dutchman Laurens Straub, who was also managing director. The film describes the development of the company and thus provides an interesting insight into the economic background of Young German Film.

German films from the Desmet Collection (Eye Filmmuseum) have contributed significantly to the revision of German film history. The program’s main film is Des Meeres und der Liebe Wellen (1912) – a little-known drama set on the Dutch coast, in which the “German Asta Nielsen” Lissi Nebuschka performs with passion and conviction.

Partly filmed with a hidden camera, Bert Haanstra shows in this documentary a charming portrait of his fellow countrymen. The film is one of the most viewed films in the Netherlands and was nominated for an Oscar for best documentary.

The task of making an anniversary film for the 10th anniversary of the GDR was taken on by Dutchman Joop Huisken, one of the founders of the DEFA documentary film studio. The poet Stephan Hermlin wrote the commentary, which was then replaced by a propagandistic text by Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler. The Alabama presents this official version.
The first version will be presented on November 20 at 5 pm in the Metropolis cinema.

Dutch cameraman Robby Müller (1940-2018) began his international career as assistant to Gérard Vandenberg in Young German Film, working with directors such as Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch and Lars von Trier. Claire Pijman’s portrait focuses on personal shots of the cameraman, accompanied by a soundtrack by Jarmusch and Carter Logan.

Westerbork – Theresienstadt. Two filmic stations of the Holocaust
Lecture with film clips, free admission

While in Westerbork (Netherlands) the SS wanted to document their work with film recordings, propaganda recordings were intended to present Theresienstadt (Czechoslovakia) as a “showcase camp” for foreign visitors and Red Cross inspectors. Fragments of the cinematic material are shown and it is explained which paths the footage took after the war.

The event will take place as an online event. Registration is required for participation.

Actress Leonie Brandt worked as a spy in the 1930s. During the war, she was imprisoned in Ravensbrück concentration camp. She survived and participated in the interrogation of war criminals after the war. Annette Apon draws the portrait of this mysterious woman with scenes from feature films and documentaries. So we see stars like Fien de la Mar, Asta Nielsen, Francesca Bertini and Pola Negri.
