One of the largest collections of private 8mm amateur films was assembled on the initiative of Prof. Laurence McFalls, from the University of Montreal and Alberto Herskovits, a German-Swedish documentary filmmaker, with the support of numerous national and international sponsors. The online-published archive contains the films of 149 families from 102 locations of the former GDR in the period of 1947 to 1990. In addition to this privately initiated collection, film heritage institutions such as the Federal Archives or the Filmmuseum Potsdam also secure amateur films. We talk with the panellists about the initial-spark for dealing with amateur films. What are the user interests? Will the collections be expanded? How is access made possible? A selection of films as part of the panel discussion is intended to arouse curiosity about a complementary perspective on the history of the GDR.

     Moderation: Undine Beier, Bundesarchiv

The forum took place both as a face-to-face event in the cinema Metropolis and at the same time online with Zoom.

Open Memory Box
